I think my love of baking began during the time I spent with my grandmother "Mimi" in her kitchen. She patiently taught me at the age of seven how to make my first birthday cake. Under her supervision, many more followed, and eventually, I no longer needed her help. When I got older, she taught me the secret to her apple pie. Although Mimi is no longer with us, I think she would have applauded my decision to return to school to hone my baking skills after spending many years as a stay-at-home mom. In the Spring of 2007 I received a certificate from the Johnson County Community College Pastry Program. Soon after, the concept of Madeleines was born with the help of two great women I met in the program. Throughout the Summer
and early Fall, our plan began to take shape and our confidence in the viability of Madeleines grew. Sadly, life got in the way for my two partners, and neither of them could stay with our fledgling company. Although I am now the sole proprietor, without their hard work, ideas and support, Madeleines would not exist today.
So to my dear friends Nancy and Brenda, I say "Thank you" for all the time we spent together, and good luck in your future endeavors. And of course, to Mimi, the world's best pie-maker, thank you for all the wonderful hours in your flour-covered kitchen.
